Foreign language spelling success for Landau Forte College

Three Year 7 students from Landau Forte College Derby are celebrating their success at a recent spelling bee competition – but this time in a different language!

The students attended the regional final of this year’s Foreign Language Spelling Bee in Corby at the end of March. The competition, which is in its seventh year, is run by Routes into Languages, a government-funded programme which aims to get more children and young people learning and enthusiastic about modern foreign languages (MFL) across the country.

Two of the College’s students, Josh and Elena , entered the spelling bee for Spanish, while the third student, Alishba, took part in the German competition. All three performed admirably and the school enjoyed excellent results in both languages: Elena achieved second place with her Spanish spelling and Alishba took the top prize in German.

As a result of their success, Elena and Alishba will both be heading to the national final in Cambridge in July in the hopes of impressing the judges with their language knowledge and spelling ability.

Alison Brannick, Principal at Landau Forte College Derby, said:

“We are very proud of Alishba, Elena and Josh for their performances at the regional spelling bee and delighted that once again our students have seen some real success in the competition. I know that Elena and Alishba will be practising regularly over the next few months in preparation for the national finals in Cambridge and we all wish them the best of luck.

“At the College, we know just how valuable modern foreign language skills can be for our students and the wide-ranging, exciting opportunities that they can open up. I am pleased therefore that our students continue to perform so well in languages like Spanish and German and that competitions like this exist to help them practise, improve and enjoy these skills outside of the classroom.”
