Our Year 9 students, who are enrolled on First Story, recently enjoyed an inspiring and enriching trip to the University of Cambridge, where they took part in a Young Writers Festival designed to spark creativity and build confidence in writing and performance. During the visit, students had the opportunity to explore Downing College, one of the university’s most beautiful and historic colleges. The guided tour included the stunning gardens, the chapel, the Master’s House, and the impressive dining hall, giving students a real insight into university life and the traditions that make Cambridge such a renowned institution.
The day continued with a dynamic creative writing workshop, where students experimented with new ideas, developed their writing skills, and were encouraged to think imaginatively. This was followed by an engaging performance workshop, which allowed students to bring their words to life, building confidence in public speaking and self-expression.
A particular highlight of the visit was the student showcase. Scarlet and Julia represented the school brilliantly by performing their work, while Daniel had the exciting opportunity to interview writer A.M. Dassu, gaining a valuable insight into the life and craft of a professional author. Students also had the chance to watch and celebrate the work of young writers from different schools, gaining inspiration from a wide range of creative voices and styles.
The trip was a fantastic experience for all involved, providing both educational value and memorable moments. Students returned feeling motivated, inspired, and excited to continue developing their writing skills. We are incredibly proud of how our Year 9 students represented the school throughout the day.
