The ArtScience Prize is an international programme through which students develop innovative art and design ideas informed by concepts at the frontiers of modern science. Landau Forte College Derby is one of only two specially selected Colleges in the UK to take part in this prestigious award, sponsored by organisations such a Harvard University and Disney.
Thirty Year Nine students were selected to work on designs for this year’s theme: ‘Energy of the Future’. Over the course of three-months, teams of students came up with some incredibly innovative concepts, from using sculpted membranes to generate electricity from wasted sound, to the design of the house of the future which uses wasted energy around the home to power electrical devices.
The teams were judged by a panel of artists and scientists all at the cutting edge of their own respective fields. The judges found it intensely difficult to select a winning team, as the standard was so high. In the end, Team AlgaeFuel (Jazzie Bal, Manny Nizzer, Dan Madeley and Ayman Yehya Ali) just had the edge for the design of elegant sculptural towers, which use Algae to synthesise biofuels – fuels used to create cleaner and greener energy. As winners of the prize, AlgaeFuel travelled to Paris for a week to develop their ideas at Le Laboratoire!
To celebrate the achievements of all of the ArtScience students – on the 6th of June we travelled to the National Maritime Museum and Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London, to exhibit their projects to members of the general public.
We are extremely proud of all of the work the students put into their projects – everyone developed their learning habits enormously as a result of the programme. Congratulations one and all!
