On Thursday the 8th of June, Landau Forte College Derby hosted their own mock general election, providing every student at the College with the opportunity to vote. What a wonderful opportunity for the students from Year 7 to 13 to be able to have such an engaging, fun and empowering experience to help us find and express our voices.
To advertise the event and encourage everyone to vote, posters (shown below) were put up, slides were displayed on the digital signage screens and emails sent out with links to a quiz to find the party that suits the students’ political opinion as well as a link to party manifestos to incite interest and initiative to discover for themselves what they believe their future should be like.
The polling stations to vote were in the Conference Centre between 7:45am – 8:30am and then again during the breakfast period to ensure everyone had an opportunity to vote. The results were collected and counted by the Student Council and delivered back to the student body by Tutor Time with information of the successful party and further statistics of the vote. The process was overseen by our Student Council to ensure an ordered and smooth voting process. Once a student’s vote had been recorded on paper they posted their slip into a secure box to ensure the process was professional and anonymous so as to simulate a real voting experience.
We will publish full details of the voting results next week.
Overall, we hope the event guided the students into caring about their futures beyond Landau Forte, seeing why voting is important and, most prominently, knowing that their voice has every power to affect change. We as a council would like to thank Ms Brannick and the Landau Forte College Derby staff for the opportunity to produce such an impactful event, one which we know is appreciated by the students.
Thank You,
Student Council
