Last month our students took part in the recent Youth Major Elections. The event was hugely successful. There were over 10,000 ballot papers issued for secondary pupils across 17 school and college venues in the Derby area. There were more than 7,000 votes cast, resulting in a 70% turnout. In comparison, a normal Local Election across the city would have a turnout of 35%. Mick Styne, the Elections and Local Land Charges Manager for Derby City Council, said that they “really appreciate the opportunity to engage with so many schools and young people across the city in encouraging them to experience the voting process. It all helps students to understand and take part when they are eligible to vote in traditional elections themselves on reaching 18.”
