Update from the Principal

Posted in News on February 11, 2025

Dear Parent/Carer,

As we come to the end of Term 3 I want to again thank you for your ongoing support. It is fantastic to see all our students working so hard and making excellent progress in their learning. We are very impressed with the maturity and commitment shown by our Year 11 students who are currently participating in their GCSE trial examinations. Our Year 13 students have received lots of exciting offers for universities and apprenticeships and are making great progress towards securing a very strong set of A level examination results in the summer.

The last day of term is Friday 14 February. We will close to students at the normal time of 3.10pm. Friday 14 February is not a non-uniform day and students should attend in full school uniform.

Equipment

Thank you for your support with regards to making sure our students are fully equipped for learning. Please do continue to ensure your child has a pencil case containing a minimum of the following:

  • Black pens and pencils
  • Red pen
  • Rubber
  • 15cm or 30cm ruler
  • Scientific calculator

Blazers

As you will know, we take great pride in how smart our students look in their uniform. I am so pleased to see the vast majority of our students wearing their uniform with real pride, but unfortunately there are times when some students do not adhere to the uniform policy. The full uniform policy is available on our website – Dress Code – Landau Forte College Derby (landau-forte.org.uk) We would ask for your support in ensuring all students bring their blazers to school. Hooded tops are not allowed in school and cannot be worn at any time, including during breakfast and lunchtimes. We will continue to challenge and put sanctions in place for students who do not follow our uniform policy as this is unfair to the majority of students who do follow the rules.

Lanyards/ swipe cards

Please ensure your child has a lanyard, swipe card and holder. The swipe card and lanyard are a key part of college uniform and students’ identification. The swipe cards also enable students to collect their printing and purchase their lunch.

Swipe cards and lanyards can be purchased from Parent Pay at the following costs:

Swipe card – £3.50

Swipe card holder – 50p

Lanyard – £1.00

Year 10 Work Experience Week

Last week, Year 10 students completed their work experience. Students participated in a wide variety of placements including law, education, engineering, sports, mechanics, pharmacy, retail and construction.

The feedback we have received from employers has been incredible and we are very proud of our Year 10 cohort. Work experience is invaluable for our young people, as it develops many transferable skills and supports the development of a young person’s self-confidence and self-esteem.

Parking at College/on Fox Street

If you collect or drop off your child in a car from Fox Street, please observe the parking restrictions and road safety. The situation on Fox Street is very challenging and I must ask again that you do not double park there. Parents continue to regularly park on the double yellow lines on both sides of the road, which means the road quickly becomes grid locked. This means that students who wish to cross Fox Street must walk out into the road between parked cars, with limited visibility, and so are placed at significant risk.

We appreciate that there is limited space while dropping off or waiting for your sons and daughters, but we would ask that you encourage your child to use public transport, you car share with other families, or make arrangements to drop off or meet your child on an adjacent street. It is vital that we keep Fox Street and the College driveway safe for our students and we continue to work with Derby City Council and the Police to look for solutions to this situation. Thank you for your support.

Safe routes to and from LFCD

We have asked students that, on their way to and from College, they use the main roads only as these roads are covered by CCTV. We have informed students not to use the Swing Bridge or walk through Cathedral Green. There is often anti-social behaviour from members of the public in these areas. We have reminded our students that if they have any issues whilst walking into the city centre or to the Bus Station that they speak to staff at the Bus Station, LFCD staff on duty at the Bus Station or they return to LFCD to gain support from staff.

The College will finish for the end of term on Friday 14 February at 3.10pm and we will welcome all students back on site at 8.20am on Monday 3 March.

If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me directly via Miss Walendziewski, PA to the Principal, [email protected]

We wish you and your family a peaceful and restful break,

Kind regards,

Alison Brannick
