Huge congratulations to four of our students who are competition winners in the World Book Day regional competition promoted by East Midlands Airport.
Well done to Sara, Mariama, Ashley and Hirah for their winning entries! As a winning school we received a £50 National Book Token to spend on library books and the students have received a special invitation to the airport to give out the book featuring their work. If you plan on visiting the airport soon, keep an eye out for The East Midlands Little Book of Travel Tales!
We hope you enjoy reading Mariama and Sara’s write-up of their Airport visit.
My Airport Report
When we first arrived we were exactly on time.
Next we all gathered round and whilst the lady was talking we didn’t make a sound.
We all had to show respect and be at our best.
After that we walked on over to the departures hall where everyone was having a ball.
We took a few photos to keep the memories alive and then here comes the part that I wanted to hide.My dad volunteered me to have a photo with a passenger against my will.
And in the photo it was kind of hard to keep still.
My dress was slippery and nearly made me slip.
But I found a way to keep my grip.Later on we grabbed some bags filled with our books and snacks.
We handed them out and boy were their suitcases and bags packed.
Soon after we went to see the fire truck.
It was six feet tall and at one point I got stuck.
We asked a few questions then we got lunch.
Since me and my dad were fasting we got a drink which the lady kindly paid for.
My dad got Vimto and I got strawberry lemonade.
We got different things but after I drank mine everything tasted the same.Once everyone finished we said our goodbyes.

My stomach churned in excitement as we arrived at the large parking waiting to spring out at any moment. My footsteps quickened towards the departures area eagerness rushing over me with every stride. As I walked through the double doors, the atmosphere around me felt welcoming.
A friendly face looked down at me, asking how my day went. I replied, then soon after she confirmed my name. I looked around, children of all ages stood before me talking to their parents. Anticipation spiralled across me, leaving nothing but a speck of boredom left. Soon everyone arrived and the lady began the tour.
The spacious corridors left more than enough room for all 12 people to roam the halls. As we followed the lady she showed us the buses which come from different parts of England. Whilst we were outside a large metal engine stood outside of the arrivals, she told us that it was made from a jet engine. A smile broadened on my face as I realised it had a meaning. The lady lastly showed us the arrivals hall which brought an end to the tour.
To continue the day we got asked to hand our copies of the travel book to people in the airport. At first I was nervous, but when I had handed out one book then my confidence grew. Once we had finished our group got called to see the airport fire truck. The firefighters explained that it carried much more water than an ordinary one, they showed us the inside of it. After a while we moved onto the next activity.
Lastly we did an Easter egg hunt. They put clues around the airport and we had to find the next clue. It was fun until a child got to the last clue before me!
To end the day we went to Greggs for some lunch which was completely free! I fulfilled my hunger by eating a sausage roll. When I had finished it, it was time to go. When we left the nice lady gave us a goody bag on the way out.
When we had reached the car disappointment struck me as I realised it was time to go however I will never forget the magical memories I had made.
