Students from Year 8 were awarded with a trip to Rolls Royce for their outstanding effort levels. They were invited to experience the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first non-stop trans-Atlantic flight in 1919 and to witness the opening of the new aviation exhibition. John Alcock and Arthur Brown made the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic in a Vickers Vimy aircraft powered by two Rolls-Royce Eagle engines. The Year 8 students experienced a day jam packed with exciting activities including a tour of the fascinating hall of the heritage centre. When the students arrived they were quizzed on their knowledge of aviation, there were 10 difficult questions. They then listened to speeches by retired engineers and observed the grand opening of the new learning exhibition by Sir Ralph Robins.
Afterwards, they were taken to a room full of activities. They built a small scale engine and had the chance to look further into the making of an engine. A tour followed around the hall of the heritage centre by a retired Rolls Royce engineer, this included the physical evolution of the Rolls Royce engines through the ages and learnt how they operate using the “Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow” method. After their lunch break, they browsed the newly opened exhibition observing the development of aircrafts and then each had a go with the VR device. The students loved how they could see the engines in 3D, and were able to zoom in on to the different parts. After a tiring and exciting day the students returned to Landau Forte College.
